Full Body MRI Scan

A full body MRI scan gives you detailed images of your brain, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and (depending on the package) your heart and major joints — all in a single session. No radiation, no needles (unless contrast is needed), and no GP referral required.

If you want to know what's going on inside your body, this is the most thorough imaging you can get.

Who Gets a Full Body MRI?

Our full body MRI customers tend to fall into a few groups:

  • Health-conscious people — They feel fine but want to know there's nothing lurking. A scan gives them solid data rather than guesswork.
  • Family history of cancer or heart disease — If a parent or sibling has been diagnosed, people want to screen earlier than the NHS offers.
  • Annual health check — Some people add a full body MRI to their yearly routine alongside blood testing. Scan one year, compare the next.
  • Over-40s check-up — A common trigger age. You're old enough that things could be developing, young enough that early detection makes the biggest difference.
  • Athletes and active people — Check joints, spine, and cardiac health in one session.

What Can a Full Body MRI Actually Find?

MRI is excellent at spotting soft tissue abnormalities. A full body scan can identify:

  • Tumours and masses — in the brain, liver, kidneys, pancreas, pelvis, spine
  • Disc herniations and spinal stenosis
  • Organ abnormalities — enlarged liver, kidney cysts, gallstones
  • Heart problems (Plus and Comprehensive) — enlarged chambers, wall motion issues, valve problems
  • Joint damage (Comprehensive) — cartilage loss, labral tears, meniscus damage
  • Inflammation and fluid collections
  • Vascular abnormalities — aneurysms, vessel narrowing

It does not replace targeted cancer screening (e.g. mammography for breast cancer) and it cannot see inside blood vessels as clearly as CT angiography. But as a broad screening tool, nothing else comes close.

What Happens on the Day

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early — Check in, complete the safety questionnaire, change into a gown.
  2. Safety screening — The radiographer asks about metal implants, pacemakers, and any claustrophobia. They'll explain the whole process.
  3. The scan — You lie on the scanner table and stay still while it captures images. It's loud — you'll get ear plugs or headphones. The radiographer talks to you through an intercom.
  4. Duration — 60-90 minutes depending on your package.
  5. After the scan — You can drive home and carry on with your day. No recovery time needed.

How Long Until I Get Results?

A consultant radiologist reviews your images and writes a detailed report, usually within 5-7 working days. You will be contacted to walk through the findings. If anything needs further investigation, we'll explain your options — which might mean a closer look at a specific area or referral to a specialist.

Pair It with Blood Testing

MRI shows you structure. Blood testing shows you function. Together, they give you the most complete view of your health available anywhere.

Our Peak 70 blood test covers 70+ biomarkers:

  • Cardiovascular risk — cholesterol, triglycerides, Lp(a), ApoB
  • Hormones — testosterone, oestradiol, DHEA-S, cortisol
  • Thyroid — TSH, Free T4, Free T3
  • Liver and kidney panels
  • Vitamins and minerals — D, B12, folate, iron, ferritin, magnesium
  • Inflammation — CRP, ESR
  • Blood sugar — HbA1c, fasting glucose, insulin

The Peak 70 + Full Body MRI bundle starts from £1,549 — less than booking them separately.

Common Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Book directly through Lola Health. Every booking is reviewed to ensure the right protocol is selected.

Is a full body MRI worth the cost?

If you want broad screening without radiation, a full body MRI is the best option available. It's particularly worthwhile if you have a family history of cancer or heart disease, or if you want a proper baseline to track over time.

How often should I have one?

Many of our customers scan annually or every two years. Paired with regular blood testing, this creates a longitudinal health record that's genuinely useful for spotting changes early.

Can I eat before the scan?

If abdominal imaging is included (it is in all full body packages), you'll be asked to fast for 4-6 hours beforehand. You can drink water. We'll send specific prep instructions when you book.

What if I'm claustrophobic?

Let us know when you book. Some centres have wider-bore scanners that feel more open. You can also speak to your GP about mild sedation if needed. The radiographer will support you throughout — many claustrophobic patients get through it fine with the right preparation.

Is MRI safe?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not radiation. It's one of the safest forms of medical imaging and can be repeated without cumulative risk. The only contraindications are certain metal implants and pacemakers.
