Private MRI Scans — Book Without a Referral

You don't need a GP referral to get a private MRI scan in the UK. Through Lola Health, you can book directly online, choose from 150+ scanning centres, and usually get an appointment within a few days.

No gatekeeping. No waiting for a GP letter. Just pick your scan, choose a centre near you, and book.

How to Book Without a Referral

  1. Choose your scan — Pick from our full body packages or individual body-part scans.
  2. Select a centre — We have 150+ locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  3. Book online — The whole process takes a few minutes.
  4. Clinical review — A clinician checks that the scan protocol matches your needs. If they think a different scan would be more useful, they'll call you before your appointment.
  5. Attend and get results — Scan takes 30-90 minutes depending on type. Results within 5-7 working days.

Why Don't I Need a Referral?

On the NHS, your GP acts as a gatekeeper — they decide whether an MRI is warranted and put you on the waiting list. That process can add weeks before you even join the queue.

With Lola Health, you make that decision yourself. Every booking is reviewed to make sure the scan protocol is appropriate. You get the clinical oversight without the bottleneck.

This is particularly useful when:

  • You have a specific concern and want imaging quickly
  • Your GP has said "let's wait and see" but you'd rather know now
  • You want a full body check to be sure
  • You're monitoring a known condition and want faster follow-up imaging
  • NHS waiting times in your area are long (often 8-20 weeks)

What About Clinical Safety?

Skipping the GP referral doesn't mean skipping clinical oversight. Here's what happens after you book:

  • Every booking is reviewed along with any notes you provide about your symptoms or concerns.
  • If they think a different scan type would give you better information, they'll contact you before your appointment.
  • The MRI radiographer goes through a safety screening questionnaire on the day (metal implants, pacemakers, pregnancy, etc.).
  • Your scan is reported by a consultant radiologist, the same grade of doctor who reports NHS scans.
  • If anything unexpected is found, we'll discuss next steps with you, which may include referral to a specialist.

Add Blood Testing for a Complete Picture

MRI shows you structure — what things look like. Blood testing shows you function — how things are working. Together, you get a much more useful view of your health.

Our Peak 70 blood test covers 70+ biomarkers including cardiovascular risk, hormones, thyroid, liver, kidneys, vitamins, and inflammation markers. You can add it to any MRI booking.

Common Questions

Is it safe to get an MRI without a GP referral?

Yes. Every booking is reviewed. The radiographer screens you on the day. And a consultant radiologist reports the scan. You get full clinical oversight throughout.

Will my GP get the results?

We can share your results with your GP if you'd like us to. Many people find it useful to have their MRI findings on their NHS record.

What if the scan finds something?

If the radiologist identifies anything that needs further investigation, the findings will be explained to you along with recommended next steps. This might mean a follow-up scan, referral to a specialist, or simply monitoring over time.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Most people can book within a few days. Compare that to 8-20 weeks for an NHS MRI in most areas.

Can I book for someone else?

Yes. You can book on behalf of a family member. They'll need to complete the safety questionnaire themselves on the day.
